Eye Opening & easy to understand & do December 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
9 Things You Simply Must Do to Succeed in Love and Life: A Psychologist Learns from His Patients What Really Works and What Doesn'tMy husband and I have read this together. We own a small business and we found that it was full of wisdom that was supportive of our marriage and family as well as our business and our relationships with our staff. We would both highly recommend the book. It is one of many from Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend we have in our library and have found them all to be empowering and easy to understand and implement. We first heard about them from Dave Ramsey[...]who recommended their work through his financial management show on Fox Business news. He is right, many financial issues are actually relationship issues first and cannot be resolved until the relationships are strengthened.
Thought Provoking November 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Whenever I read a self-help book, I'm in search of gaining information to change my life for the better, and I'm usually disappointed. I really enjoyed this book however, and believe this one is indeed a life-changer.
I wish I'd had this book years ago! September 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is not the first time I've benefitted from Henry Cloud's wisdom & insight--this is definitely a man who's doing what he's MADE to do. In addition to showing the reader how each of the 9 things "works" externally, Cloud also explains how each of them resonates internally AS you do them. Brilliant!
I am thrilled to discover that these "9 things" can be learned--even if you didn't get them by osmosis growing up. What hope for late bloomers! This book is by my bedside too--cuz I intend to read it as often as necessary til the "9 things" become second nature.
P.S. The writing slightly lagged about 2/3 of the way thru, which is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. But hey, we're all learning & growing--even Henry Cloud, right?
Life-changing and life-defining book! November 29, 2007 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Easy-to-read content with clear, pertinent examples of each of the '9 things' we must do to experience personal and professional success. Very common sense stuff. The presentation is like concentrated orange juice: it's weighty content that most of us have heard about in a watered down manner, or we KNOW it's true, but it's in the BACK of our minds, not in the forefront. Cloud brings these significant issues to the FOREFRONT of our minds, and he makes them memorable so that they will be imprinted on our minds, if we choose to adopt them. I have a friend who can't quickly get through the book b/c the truth is hard to embrace, sometimes. This material can be VERY CHALLENGING to adopt and apply in our lives, but, I'm living a much more peaceful and fulfilling life by just applying what I've learned so far, and I'm only about 80% through the book.... It's only when we challenge ourselves that true growth takes place. Growth never comes easily.
Good perspective November 5, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Henry Cloud's basic approach to life finds a new voice and perspective in this observation of people who succeed at living out their desires. Filled with Henry's no-nonsense understanding of how life works, this literary cousin of "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" is a motivational reminder to think about life clearly and well.
